This is one of Nicolas' current favorites. And I have to admit, one of mine too. I mean I love all his books but some are definitely better than others.
In this story, the little boy asks his mama if she would still love him if he were a big, scary, APE. Or if he were a super smelly skunk, if he were an alligator with big, sharp teeth. He continues to ask her if she would love him if he were a terrible meat eating dinosaur, a swamp creature with slimy, smelly seaweed hanging from his body, or a green alien from Mars that ate bugs instead of peanut butter. He finally asks if she would love him even if he were a one eyed monster. With every scenario, she has an answer for him. Included in her answer, she mentions that she would still love him.
I love that most little boys think of the gross, scary, and smelly details whereas girls don't. It's sweet to read how this little boy tries to stump his mama to see if her love was strong enough to handle the most disgusting circumstances. The sweeter part is reading and knowing that this mama wasn't just telling her little boy what he wanted to hear, but that it was the truth. Being a mama to a little boy definitely changes your perspective on what's gross.
I can definitely relate to this book in many ways. There is nothing that my little boy could do, or anything that could come out of his mouth, nose, or bottom that would gross me out. That's my little boy and no matter how disgusting he or anything he does may seem, I'll love him no matter what.
